Growing Audiences, Shrinking Margins

Independent arts publications are reaching growing audiences, documenting local cultural life, and strengthening civic discourse. Yet they are also falling through the cracks, not supported with the same consistency as other forms of journalism.

In early 2026, the Rabkin Foundation and Critical Minded surveyed 141 independent arts and culture publications across 34 states and the District of Columbia, producing one of the most comprehensive snapshots to date of this vital but under-resourced field.

The findings reveal a striking contradiction: Publications are serving expanding audiences with remarkably small staffs and budgets, even as they struggle to secure consistent financial support. This precarity is further compounded by escalating free-speech pressures and shifting funding priorities. The report argues that arts journalism is not a niche concern but essential civic infrastructure deserving far greater investment.
