Julia Halperin is an arts and culture journalist, editor, and researcher. She is a contributor to T Magazine, The New York Times, and the Financial Times; editor at large of Cultured magazine; and a contributing editor to The Art Newspaper, where she writes a monthly column on the state of change in American museums. She is the co-founder, with Charlotte Burns, of the Burns Halperin Report, the largest publication of its kind tracking equity and representation in the art world. From 2017 to 2022, Halperin was executive editor of Artnet News, where she managed editors and writers in London, Berlin, and New York City. She previously served as museums editor of The Art Newspaper and news editor of Art + Auction. Her writing and reporting focus on how change happens in the art world, how cultural value is created, and how data can illustrate and address structural problems. She is a founding member of the DREAM (Data & Research on Equity in Art Museums) Consortium, an alliance among Museums Moving Forward, Black Trustee Alliance for Art Museums, the Burns Halperin Report, and SMU DataArts to pool resources, data, and expertise for the museum field. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, W magazine, Bloomberg, and New York magazine. Halperin was named to Apollo’s 40 Under 40 USA list in 2023. She has a bachelor’s degree in art history and English literature from Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.
