Damien Davis is a Newark, N.J.-based artist, writer, and educator whose work examines how power, race, and cultural narratives are constructed and circulated through visual art and media. He is a regular contributor to Hyperallergic, where his essays critically engage the politics of visibility, institutional framing, and the conditions under which artists produce and sustain their work. His writing addresses issues ranging from exploitative gallery models and the economics of artistic labor to the ways Black representation is shaped, managed, and often constrained within dominant cultural systems. Across his practice, Davis brings an artist-centered perspective to criticism, grounding his analysis in lived experience and material conditions. Davis has exhibited widely, with presentations at major New York City institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Arts and Design. His public art commissions include projects with New York’s MTA Arts & Design and Valley Metro in Phoenix. He is a curatorial adjunct faculty member at New York University, where he manages the IDM Gallery and works with students on exhibition development and contemporary curatorial practice. He also has held curatorial roles at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling in New York.
