Alicia Inez Guzmán was raised in the northern New Mexico village of Truchas on land passed down through many generations of women. After a stint in academia immersed in histories of land use in the Southwest, she began a career in journalism fusing long-form, arts and culture, and investigative writing. Most recently, she was a Local Investigations Fellow with The New York Times, reporting on the $1.7 trillion effort to modernize the U.S. arsenal of nuclear weapons. Her yearslong interest in the nuclear industry also has yielded personal and art exhibition catalog essays reflecting on the complex relationship of the Southwest to uranium mining, weapons production, and the environmental consequences of both. She has a doctoral degree in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester in New York. Awards include a 2017 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, a 2021 Society for Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for excellence in journalism, and the 2024 MOLLY National Journalism Prize in investigative journalism.
